About Independence Day

National Independence Day (Narodowe Święto Niepodległości), observed on 11 November, commemorates Poland regaining its sovereignty in 1918 after 123 years of partition among Russia, Prussia, and Austria. On that date, following the end of the First World War, Józef Piłsudski assumed command of the armed forces and a sovereign Polish state re-emerged on the map of Europe after more than a century of foreign rule.

The day is marked by official state ceremonies, military honours, and the laying of wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Warsaw, attended by national leaders. Church services and flag displays are common across the country. The most prominent event is the large Independence March through Warsaw, which draws tens of thousands of participants each year.
