Norway's Constitution Day, known as syttende mai or the seventeenth of May, marks the signing of the Norwegian constitution at Eidsvoll in 1814. That document made Norway a modern nation with its own governing charter, even as a union with Sweden soon followed. Today it is the country's foremost civic celebration, a warm and joyful national day rather than a military occasion.
The day belongs to children, who march in local parades waving flags and singing, led by school marching bands rather than soldiers.
