In 2025, Constitution Day falls on a Saturday, on the weekend.
About Constitution Day
Norway's Constitution Day, known as syttende mai or the seventeenth of May, marks the signing of the Norwegian constitution at Eidsvoll in 1814. That document made Norway a modern nation with its own governing charter, even as a union with Sweden soon followed. Today it is the country's foremost civic celebration, a warm and joyful national day rather than a military occasion.
The day belongs to children, who march in local parades waving flags and singing, led by school marching bands rather than soldiers. Many Norwegians wear the bunad, the regional folk costume, while graduating students called russ celebrate in their coloured overalls. Families gather for breakfast, ice cream and hot dogs flow freely, and towns everywhere ring with cheerful shouts of hurra for the seventeenth of May.
