About Mountain Day

Mountain Day (Yama no Hi) is a Japanese national holiday observed on 11 August. Introduced in 2016, it is the country's newest public holiday and was created as an occasion to appreciate mountains and the blessings they bring, complementing the earlier Marine Day. Its August date sits just before the Obon period, making it part of a peak summer travel season.

Because Mountain Day falls near the Obon holidays, many people combine the two into an extended break, travelling to hometowns or mountain resorts. Hiking, camping and visits to national parks are especially popular, and mountain regions hold local events, guided walks and ceremonies. Some towns mark the day with festivals celebrating forests and highland culture. For city dwellers it is a natural prompt to seek cooler air at higher elevations.
