About Constitution Day
Spanish Constitution Day, celebrated on 6 December, marks the ratification of the 1978 constitution by referendum. Drafted after the death of Franco, it sealed Spain's transition from dictatorship to parliamentary democracy and established the country as a constitutional monarchy. The document guarantees fundamental rights, regional autonomy and the rule of law. It is a national public holiday observed across the entire country.
Because the holiday falls close to the Immaculate Conception on 8 December, the two are frequently linked by a puente, a bridge day off that creates a long weekend.
