About Swiss National Day
Switzerland's National Day, the Bundesfeier, is celebrated on 1 August each year. It commemorates the federal charter of 1291, when representatives of three alpine valleys swore a pact of mutual defence, an oath long regarded as the founding moment of the Swiss Confederation. Recognised as a national holiday only in modern times, it now unites the country's four language regions in a shared act of remembrance.
