In 2028, Swiss National Day falls on a Tuesday, so the Monday before is often taken as a bridge day for a four-day weekend.
About Swiss National Day
Switzerland's National Day, the Bundesfeier, is celebrated on 1 August each year. It commemorates the federal charter of 1291, when representatives of three alpine valleys swore a pact of mutual defence, an oath long regarded as the founding moment of the Swiss Confederation. Recognised as a national holiday only in modern times, it now unites the country's four language regions in a shared act of remembrance.
As dusk falls, bonfires are lit on hillsides and mountain peaks across the country, a chain of flames echoing the old signal fires of the cantons. Villages hold speeches, brass-band music and communal breakfasts, and children carry glowing paper lanterns through the streets. Fireworks light the summer sky, red-and-white flags hang from windows and balconies, and many communities gather for a shared open-air meal.
