About All Souls' Day
All Souls' Day, observed on 2 November, is the Catholic commemoration of all the faithful departed. Following All Saints' Day on 1 November, it is dedicated to praying for the souls of the dead, especially those believed to be in purgatory. The Church encourages the living to remember relatives and friends who have passed and to intercede on their behalf.
In Catholic countries families visit cemeteries to tend graves, laying flowers, especially chrysanthemums, and lighting candles that glow through the autumn evening. In Poland, cemeteries shimmer with thousands of lights on this night. Masses are offered for the departed, and in Mexico the overlapping Day of the Dead brings marigolds, sugar skulls, and altars honouring deceased loved ones.
