About Tiradentes Day
Tiradentes Day is a Brazilian national holiday observed on 21 April. It honours Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, nicknamed Tiradentes, a leader of the Inconfidência Mineira, an eighteenth-century movement seeking independence from Portuguese colonial rule. Arrested and tried for his role in the conspiracy, he was executed by hanging on 21 April 1792 and is remembered as a national martyr and hero.
As a national holiday, banks, schools and most businesses close throughout Brazil. Official ceremonies and wreath-laying take place in Minas Gerais, especially in Ouro Preto and the state capital Belo Horizonte, where Tiradentes led the movement.
