About Veterans Day
Veterans Day is a United States federal holiday observed on 11 November honoring all who have served in the country's armed forces. It grew out of Armistice Day, which marked the ceasefire that ended the First World War on 11 November 1918. Congress renamed the day in 1954 to recognize veterans of every conflict, not only the Great War.
The main national ceremony takes place at Arlington National Cemetery, where the president or a senior official lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Many communities hold parades, and a two-minute silence is often observed at eleven in the morning. Schools, veterans' organizations and businesses honor former service members, and many restaurants offer them free meals.
