About New Year's Eve
New Year's Eve falls on 31 December, the final day of the Gregorian calendar year, and leads into the celebration that welcomes the year to come. It has no single origin, drawing instead on centuries of European midwinter customs and the fixing of 1 January as the year's start. Today it is one of the most widely observed secular occasions in the world.
The evening is marked by parties, shared meals and a countdown to midnight, when fireworks light up cities worldwide and people toast the new year. Many exchange kisses, sing songs such as Auld Lang Syne and make resolutions for the months ahead. Although 31 December is usually a normal working day, shops, offices and public transport often close early to let people celebrate.
