About King's Day

King's Day (Koningsdag) is the Netherlands' national holiday, celebrated on 27 April to mark the birthday of King Willem-Alexander, who acceded to the throne in 2013. It grew out of Queen's Day, which honoured earlier monarchs, and the date shifted from 30 April to the new king's actual birthday. When 27 April falls on a Sunday, the holiday is observed the day before, on 26 April.

On King's Day the whole country turns orange, the colour of the royal House of Orange-Nassau, as people wear orange clothing, wigs and face paint. Amsterdam's canals fill with decorated boats, and towns and cities host street parties, live music and children's games. The day's signature event is the vrijmarkt, a nationwide free market where anyone may sell secondhand goods on the street without a permit or tax.
