About Liberation Day

The Netherlands' Liberation Day (Bevrijdingsdag) is celebrated on 5 May and marks the end of the German occupation in 1945. On that date the German forces in the Netherlands capitulated, closing five years of occupation during the Second World War. It follows directly on 4 May, the national Remembrance of the Dead, forming a two-day sequence of mourning and celebration.

The day opens with liberation festivals (bevrijdingsfestivals) held in cities across the provinces, featuring open-air concerts, speeches and events promoting freedom. Travelling musicians known as Ambassadors of Freedom perform around the country. Although celebrated every year, it is an official paid day off for most private-sector workers only once every five years, when anniversaries are marked on a larger scale.
