About Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe
The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on 12 December is Mexico's most important religious festival. It commemorates the apparitions of the Virgin Mary to the indigenous man Juan Diego on the hill of Tepeyac in 1531, and the miraculous image left on his cloak. Though not a statutory day off, it is observed with deep devotion by millions across the country.
Millions of pilgrims travel to the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City, many walking long distances or approaching on their knees. Celebrations begin the night before with Las Mañanitas, a serenade sung to the Virgin, followed by masses, dances by matachines, and processions. Homes and churches are decorated with roses, the flower tied to the apparition story, and families gather for festive meals.
