About Greenery Day
Greenery Day (Midori no Hi) is a Japanese public holiday held on 4 May, dedicated to communing with nature and giving thanks for its blessings. The name reflects the late Emperor Showa's well-known love of plants and the natural world. Originally the holiday fell on 29 April, his birthday, but when that date became Showa Day in 2007, Greenery Day was moved to 4 May, filling a gap between two other holidays. It forms part of the string of spring holidays known as Golden Week.
Greenery Day encourages people to enjoy the outdoors and appreciate the natural world, and many spend it among plants and open air. Parks, botanical gardens, zoos and mountain trails grow crowded, and some public gardens waive admission or hold special events for the occasion. Families picnic, hike or plant trees as the fresh green of early May comes into its own. Falling near the end of Golden Week, it also blends into a broader stretch of travel and leisure; offices, banks and many businesses stay closed.
