In 2028, Sports Day falls on a Monday, giving many a long weekend.
About Sports Day
Sports Day (Supotsu no Hi, called Taiiku no Hi until 2020) is a Japanese public holiday on the second Monday of October that promotes physical activity and health. It was first held on 10 October 1966 to commemorate the opening of the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games on that date. In 2000 it moved to the second Monday under the Happy Monday system, and it was renamed Sports Day in 2020.
Across Japan, schools, workplaces and communities hold undokai, athletic meets featuring relay races, tug-of-war, ball-toss games and team events for all ages. Autumn's mild weather makes it a popular season for such gatherings, and family members often attend to cheer participants. Gyms, parks and sports facilities open events to the public, and many people mark the day with recreational exercise, hikes or other outdoor activity.
