Vernal Equinox Day (Shunbun no Hi) is a Japanese national holiday held around 20 or 21 March, when day and night are nearly equal in length. Its exact date is set each year based on astronomical calculation of the equinox. The holiday celebrates the arrival of spring and encourages people to admire nature and cherish living things. It also has roots in honouring ancestors and the changing of the seasons.
The equinox falls in the middle of the seven-day Buddhist period known as higan, when many families visit ancestral graves to clean the headstones, offer flowers and incense, and pray. A traditional food eaten at this time is botamochi, sweet rice balls covered in red bean paste. People also enjoy the emerging spring, with plum and early cherry blossoms appearing and the days growing noticeably longer and warmer.
