Constitution Memorial Day (Kenpo Kinenbi) is a Japanese public holiday held on 3 May to mark the day in 1947 when the country's postwar constitution took effect. Drafted under the Allied occupation that followed the Second World War, the document replaced the earlier Meiji Constitution, establishing popular sovereignty, fundamental human rights and Article 9, in which Japan renounces war. The holiday encourages citizens to reflect on the constitution, on democratic government and on the meaning of a peaceful state. It falls in the middle of the Golden Week holiday period.

Constitution Memorial Day is observed quietly, without large public ceremonies, and functions in part as a day of civic reflection. Newspapers and broadcasters run features and debates about the constitution, and Article 9 in particular remains a subject of ongoing national discussion. Some civic groups hold forums or rallies. Because it falls in the heart of Golden Week, however, most people experience it as part of an extended break, travelling, resting at home or visiting attractions. Government offices, banks and many businesses close, and popular destinations are busy.
