About Gandhi Jayanti

Gandhi Jayanti is observed across India every 2 October to mark the birthday of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the leader of the country's independence movement. It is one of India's three national holidays, alongside Independence Day and Republic Day. In 2007 the United Nations declared the same date the International Day of Non-Violence, honouring Gandhi's philosophy of peaceful resistance and its influence on movements worldwide.

Ceremonies begin at Raj Ghat in Delhi, Gandhi's memorial, where the prime minister and other leaders lay flowers and offer prayers. Across the country schools and public buildings hold gatherings, sing his favourite hymn Raghupati Raghava, and reflect on themes of peace and simple living. Being a national holiday, offices, banks and most shops close. Many communities mark the day with cleanliness drives and tributes to non-violence.
