About Republic Day
Republic Day in India is observed on 26 January and commemorates the day in 1950 when the Constitution of India came into force, replacing the Government of India Act of 1935 as the country's governing document. The date was chosen to honour the 1930 declaration of Purna Swaraj, or complete independence, made by the Indian National Congress. It transformed India into a sovereign democratic republic.
The centrepiece is a grand parade in New Delhi along Kartavya Path, from Rashtrapati Bhavan to India Gate, featuring the armed forces, military hardware, mounted units and marching bands. Colourful tableaux from the states and union territories display regional culture, alongside folk dances and school performances. The President unfurls the national flag, a flypast follows, and similar ceremonies take place in state capitals across the country.
