About Armistice Day

Armistice Day (Armistice 1918) is a French public holiday held on 11 November. It marks the armistice signed in a railway carriage in the forest of Compiegne, which took effect at eleven o'clock on the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, ending the fighting of the First World War. The day pays homage to the roughly 1.4 million French soldiers who died and to all who fell in the conflict.

At eleven in the morning the president lays a wreath and relights the flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier beneath the Arc de Triomphe, buried there since 1920, and a minute of silence is observed. Every French commune holds a gathering at its war memorial, where mayors, veterans and schoolchildren read the names of the dead. The blue cornflower (bleuet) is worn as a symbol of remembrance. Shops and offices close.
