About Victory in Europe Day

Victory in Europe Day (Victoire 1945) is a French public holiday observed on 8 May. It commemorates the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany, which came into effect on that date in 1945 and ended the Second World War in Europe. The day honours the millions of military and civilian dead and marks the liberation of France and its allies from Nazi occupation and aggression.

The president leads the national ceremony in Paris, laying a wreath at the statue of Charles de Gaulle and reviving the flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier beneath the Arc de Triomphe. Across France, mayors gather with veterans and schoolchildren at local war memorials to lay wreaths and read the roll of the fallen. Military bands play and flags are lowered. As a public holiday, most shops, banks and offices stay closed.
