About Independence Day (Finland)

Finland's Independence Day (Itsenäisyyspäivä) falls on 6 December and commemorates the country's declaration of independence from Russia in 1917. After centuries under Swedish rule and about a hundred years as an autonomous Grand Duchy within the Russian Empire, the Finnish parliament adopted the declaration during the turmoil of the Russian Revolution. It remains one of Finland's most solemn national holidays.

Finns mark the day by placing two blue-and-white candles in their windows, a quiet custom dating back to the era of Russian rule. Blue and white flowers and ribbons are common, and many people visit cemeteries to honour those who died for independence. The evening's televised Presidential reception at the palace, the Linnan juhlat, draws a huge national audience.
