About Maundy Thursday
Maundy Thursday, the Thursday before Easter, commemorates the Last Supper that Jesus shared with his disciples and the washing of their feet. Its name derives from the Latin mandatum, the new commandment to love one another. In Norway and Denmark it is a public holiday, and across the Christian world it opens the sacred days of the Easter Triduum.
Churches hold the evening Mass of the Lord's Supper, and priests or even the Pope wash the feet of parishioners in imitation of Christ's humility. Afterwards altars are stripped bare and bells fall silent until the Easter Vigil. In Norway many enjoy the long spring holiday at mountain cabins, giving rise to the tongue-in-cheek genre of Easter crime fiction.
