German Unity Day (Tag der Deutschen Einheit) is Germany's national holiday, celebrated every 3 October. It marks the day in 1990 when the former East Germany formally joined the Federal Republic, reuniting the country after decades of division during the Cold War. The date was chosen over 9 November, the fall of the Berlin Wall, because that anniversary also recalls the antisemitic pogroms of 1938.
There is no single fixed programme; the celebrations move each year to the capital of the state currently holding the rotating presidency of the Bundesrat. That city hosts the main citizens' festival (Buergerfest), a two- or three-day event with stages, food stalls, and pavilions from all sixteen states. Official ceremonies include a church service and speeches, while towns everywhere fly flags. As a public holiday, shops and offices are closed nationwide.
