About Carnival Tuesday
Carnival Tuesday in Brazil, known in Portuguese as Terça-feira de Carnaval, is the day before Ash Wednesday and marks the climax of the Carnival season. Like the preceding Monday, its date moves each year with Easter. The evening leads into the start of Lent at midnight, so the celebrations reach their most intense point before the quieter religious period begins.
The day's most famous spectacle is the Special Group parade at Rio de Janeiro's Sambadrome, where top samba schools compete with elaborate floats, costumes and thousands of performers. São Paulo holds a similar competition at its own Anhembi Sambadrome, and Salvador and Recife fill their streets with music. Millions watch on television as revelry continues until Ash Wednesday morning.
