In 2028, Our Lady of Aparecida falls on a Thursday, so the Friday after is often taken as a bridge day.
About Our Lady of Aparecida
Our Lady of Aparecida is the patron saint of Brazil, honoured with a feast on 12 October, a national public holiday. Her cult began in 1717, when three fishermen on the Paraíba do Sul River reportedly pulled a small, dark terracotta statue of the Virgin from their nets after a poor catch, then filled them to overflowing. The image became a focus of Marian devotion across the country.
The heart of the celebration is the vast Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida in São Paulo state, one of the largest Marian churches in the world, which draws millions of pilgrims each 12 October. The day mixes Masses, processions and popular festivities. Because it coincides with the Day of the Child, Brazilian families also give presents to children and organise outings and games.
