About Austrian National Day
Austria's National Day, the Nationalfeiertag, is held on 26 October each year. It commemorates the day in 1955 when the Austrian parliament declared the country's permanent neutrality, shortly after the last Allied occupation troops had left. The date has come to symbolise the restoration of full sovereignty after the Second World War, and it is now a public holiday observed throughout the republic.
It is a quiet, civic holiday rather than a boisterous one. Many state museums and federal collections open their doors free of charge, drawing families and visitors into the galleries. The armed forces stage a public display on Vienna's Heldenplatz, showing equipment and swearing in recruits, while the president lays a wreath. Long-distance walks and hikes are also a popular way to mark the autumn day.
