In 2025, Immaculate Conception falls on a Monday, giving many a long weekend.
About Immaculate Conception
The Feast of the Immaculate Conception, celebrated on 8 December, honours the Catholic dogma that the Virgin Mary was conceived free from original sin. Pope Pius IX solemnly defined this teaching in 1854 with the bull Ineffabilis Deus. Widely observed across Catholic Europe and Latin America, the day is a public holiday in many countries and traditionally marks the opening of the Christmas season.
In Spain, Italy, Portugal and much of Latin America, the day brings Marian processions, special Masses and the crowning of statues with flowers. In Rome the Pope visits the column of the Immaculate near the Spanish Steps to lay a wreath. In many homes and towns it is the moment to set up nativity scenes and Christmas trees, blending devotion with the first festive preparations of the season.
